Phillips display cheers Bond

Kevin Bond insists an in-form Matt Phillips could prove crucial to QPR's promotion push - just as he was in Rangers' 2-0 victory against former club Blackpool.

Phillips, who moved from Bloomfield Road to Rangers in the summer for a reported £5million, paid some of his fee back with a second-half strike before Charlie Austin sealed QPR's return to the top of the Sky Bet Championship.

And QPR assistant Bond, who earlier saw promotion rivals Leicester and Burnley play out a 1-1 draw, praised the impact of winger Phillips.

"Matt [Phillips] did well, his first goal took a deflection but his cross for the second was brilliant," said Bond.

"Charlie Austin hasn't had enough of those chances this season, but the delivery was perfect.

"Blackpool know what Matt has to offer and in the second half he was a big threat.

"He'll be very keen to do well for us in a side that wants to do things this season.

"It's important for him that goal and he deserved to celebrate his goal.

"In the end it was a good win. We played very well second half in difficult weather.

"We earned the right to play; we were under a lot of pressure in the first half.

"We've defended really well this season and we did that again. The second goal was a fantastic goal and we were worthy winners in the end. We knew how difficult this would be."

The hosts dominated the first 45 minutes with Steven Davies, Craig Cathcart and Dan Gosling all wasting good chances.

Phillips fired home from 25 yards on 61 minutes, though, and then crossed for Austin who headed home 12 minutes later.

The result leaves Blackpool outside the play-off places and assistant boss Steve Thompson was left to rue the missed first-half chances.

"It's a cliche but it was a game of two halves," said Thompson. "We maybe lacked a bit of quality in attack in the first half but we still created three or four good goalscoring opportunities.

"We spoke to them at half-time and said it's the decision making in the final third that wins you games and we just didn't seem to have that in the first half, that little bit of quality.

"We were punished for that in the second half. We know how good they are and how good their squad is but Harry Redknapp has just told us we should have been 2-0 up in the first half.

"The goals were a combination of errors. The deflection for the first goal after we gave the ball away and perhaps the second was just a quality goal - a one-two and a cross and a good header.

"Matt [Phillips] had a say in two pivotal moments in the game."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
