Jordi Amat: The rookie defender is set to make his competitive debut against Mal

The 21-year-old signed for the Premier League outfit in a £2.5m deal as he swapped Spain for south Wales.

Amat, who spent last season on loan at Rayo Vallecano, impressed in the club's 3-0 friendly win at Reading on Saturday after boss Michael Laudrup picked him ahead of Garry Monk and the injured Chico Flores.

And he is now ready to do all he can to keep his place alongside Ashley Williams in the centre-back position.

"Swansea have a very good and strong team," he told the Daily Star.

"It makes it easy for the new players and me to come into the team and play football with my friends.

"We have very good centre-backs and I am learning off them.

"I'm enjoying myself and happy to be here - it's a big opportunity for me."

The Spain Under-21 international is a likely starter for the Swans first leg of the third qualifying round Europa League clash clash with Malmo on Thursday night.

And Amat says he will be ready for his competitive debut against the Swedes at the Liberty Stadium.

"Facing Malmo will be the biggest game of my career so far," he said.

"The Europa League is a big competition and this game is very important. I don't know what team the manager will select but I hope I get the chance to play - I am ready for the challenge.

"Hopefully playing in La Liga will help me and I'm excited and looking forward to the first game."

Rodgers: No defence coach

T

hat's it for me, that's ego talking and nothing more. Three seasons in and he still hasn't resolved the issues in defence. This won't end well, he doesn't have the skills needed to sort out the back four and isn't prepared to bring in those who do. This is the worst team I've seen since the late days of Houllier. Brendan...you're fired.

It would certainly be a good idea to give Victor Valdes a contract, while we have more mails on Brendan Rodgers, Arsene Wenger, the rabona and mailbox gripes...
