Steve Lomas: Lions must maintain standards

The Lions were bottom before the 3-1 win, and Blackpool were top, but Lomas' men battled to their first victory of the season.

Millwall take on south London rivals Charlton on Saturday and Lomas says his players "put down a marker" against the Seasiders.

He said: "It is going to be a typical derby - very physical. We will need to do all of the basics well - like we did on Tuesday - and man-for-man battles will be key.

"If we can win enough of them, then that goes a long way to getting a result. The lads have set down a marker now - that effort, that commitment is a prerequistie and is the bare minimum expected of them.

"You can have a bad game, your first touch can be heavy and your passing can be off, but if you scrap and give the bloke your playing against have a tough afternoon, then you cannot really complain.

"Managers will be talking about the same basics in another 100 years, whatever way football goes. You've got to pay teams respect and fight for every ball - that will be the crux of the derby on Saturday.

"Yann Kermorgant is a very good individual but Charlton have a good team ethos about them; they all work hard and know their jobs.

"It will be a high-tempo, in-your-face game and it is live on television, so there is an added incentive there as well. It will be a very tough game so we have to follow on from recent away performances.

"Our comeback against Blackpool was especially pleasing because it showed that there is character and togetherness in the team. Even the players who were left out of the squad came into the dressing room afterwards and celebrated with the boys."

""The supporters were brilliant and their backing must have given the players a massive lift, because it certainly gave me one," he said. "They got behind the team really well.

"If you are trying and having a go, fans appreciate that and especially Millwall fans. They're honest, loyal and they will accept a bad result here and there as long as the manner of the performance is right.

"If you give it everything and graft for every ball, they will go with you."

You can see the game live on Sky Sports 1 with coverage starting at noon.
