Brighton assistant head coach Nathan Jones did not rule out automatic promotion for the Seagulls after their 2-0 win at Bolton put them on the cusp of the top six.

Winger Will Buckley scored a goal either side of half-time for Albion, with two clinical finishes in a game with few chances for either team.

The victory sees Brighton move just one point off the play-off places, with a game in hand over both Reading and Nottingham Forest in seventh and sixth respectively.

Jones said: "Is the target the play-offs or higher? The target is to finish as high as we possibly can.

"Realistically, we're very pleased of the position that we are in. We had a very difficult start after having a lot of injuries when we first came in which really held us back but we've managed to rally and we're in a good position.

"We're not getting carried away, we've got 10 games left, but I remember being at Charlton last year where they were looking at relegation at this stage last year. With 10 games to go they won eight of them and only just missed out on the play-offs."

Jones also reserved special praise for Buckley, adding: "If we can keep Will fit he's a fantastic player for us. He makes the difference with that little bit of pace and we're very happy to have Will and we worked very hard to keep him here.

"I thought they were two excellent finishes, even before his first goal was saved it was a great save from their keeper."

Bolton manager Dougie Freedman was not too displeased with his team's performance after the defeat ended their four-match unbeaten run.

Freedman said: "We're disappointed with the result but if you break the game down it boiled down to not taking our opportunities.

"I think that Brighton had the rub of the green but they were two really fantastic finishes from them and you have to take your hat off to them.

"The simple facts were when we got the ball into the box we just didn't take our opportunities."

Freedman also revealed his long-term intentions for the club after the match.

Freedman added: "The financial position has been clearly put out there about where we are as a club.

"The football club was in a fantastic position when we had 10 years in the Premier League. Now we are having a difficult moment but there is a plan there to move forward to make sure we address these issues.

"The plan is to get young players who can take us forward rather than signing older players who are on their way down as footballers."
