It was the 17-year-old's recent displays in training and for the Under-18s that persuaded Tisdale to introduce Jay for the final 21 minutes against the Chairboys.

"I loved Matt Jay - that was a really big plus for the team," he said. "He came on to the pitch and looked a proper player, and as a 17-year-old that was a big plus for us.

"I've seen him in training and the odd youth-team game and he's been coming on for the reserves. He is mentally very bright, he is tough beyond his size, and he retains the ball and makes good decisions on the ball.

"He keeps the ball, retains possession and makes decisions as well as anybody in our group. You get judged on your execution and what you do, and what he did was excellent."

It was Jay's first appearance in a matchday squad and he was only handed a squad number before kick-off and by the final whistle was one of seven Exeter youth products on the pitch.

ven if United were to sign CR7 & Messi to play upfront, the fact remains Fletcher and Cleverly are playing in midfield. That's where the problem is. Fletcher is too slow with an awful pass, while Cleverly is simply rubbish
