John Hughes: Feels the award is bad luck

The Pools boss is a shoe-in for the League One award after chalking up a fifth win from seven games in February.

But, after Pools' biggest win in over a year, Hughes said: "Don't talk about manager of the month - I've had it before and it's a kiss of death.

"Let's just enjoy this win and reflect on it and get ready to go again on Saturday."

While Pools were never in doubt of victory after taking the lead in the 27th minute when Charlie Wyke headed in from close range, other results conspired against them.

Relegation rivals Bury, Scunthorpe and Colchester all won to leave Pools still six points shy of safety.

Hughes said: "Results went against us, but I'm not worried about that and I've told my players that.

"Look after ourselves, keep the run going and what will happen will happen. Keep winning and picking up points. Listen, what does it matter? We were down at Christmas - look at what the boys have done.

"Everyone of them has been remarkable. I can only thank them for their efforts. Who knows where we will be, but keep going like that and we have a chance."

After Wyke's goal, Pools made it two when Jon Franks fired in low from 18 yards after 39 minutes and substitute Andy Monkhouse smashed in the third in the 90th minute.
