Company honour for Aberdeen

In the 1980's Sir Alex Ferguson turned Aberdeen into one of the powerhouses not just of Scottish football but also of Europe.

A company in Aberdeen has launched a competition to name one of their buses after one of the city's footballing legends, 30 years after the Dons enjoyed one of their most famous nights - a 2-1 European Cup Winners Cup victory over Real Madrid.

The scheme has won the approval of Pittodrie legend Neil Simpson, who was part of Sir Alex Ferguson's team that claimed that stunning extra-time victory in Sweden in 1983.

Simpson told Sky Sports News: "Members of the public can go on line to vote for who they think the bus should be named after. It's a fun competition, it's quite nice, especially as it is the 30-year anniversary of that famous night in Gothenburg."

Willie Miller was another member of Ferguson's European heroes, and the former Dons centre-back is in no doubt as to who he thinks should win the public vote.

"I would imagine that Sir Alex would start as favourite to win the poll," he said. "Not only for what he did at Aberdeen , but also for his exploits in Manchester and the fact that he retired this year.

"I'm sure he will be the front runner but I am hoping there will be a little bit of competition there. It's down to the good folk of Aberdeen."

It has been 18 years since the Dons last won any silverware - a 2-0 League Cup final success over Dundee - and the burden of ending that trophy drought now falls to manager Derek McInnes.

"It's part of the reason I want to be here and want to be manager," he said. "Our supporters crave being up near the top of the table and challenging up there.

"I'm not saying winning the league but they would like to see us in cup finals and competing for European spots. Hopefully this season we can see that improvement."

was there, it was embarrassing - the team looked totally unbalanced from the off, the defence was woeful and when Mikel came off injured it got even worse with nobody in front of them. Up front on several occasions we had opportunities and nobody would shoot - it was a complete farse! On the back of Salah's performance I'm glad there is talk of getting shot...

reat to see Tommy Rosicky getting some love. A wonderful player. Such a pity we lost so long to injury. I was so excited when we signed him, this resurgence only makes the absences seem more of a lost opportunity.
