Earlier in the week, Barton's agent, Willy McKay, said that the midfielder's wages were a stumbling block for Marseille but after contacting Everton his client would consider a wage cut to play for the Goodison Park club.
However Marseille's sporting director José Anigo has insisted that nothing has changed from his club's point of view since they put forward their proposal to sign Barton from QPR.
"Everton? I didn't know anything," said Anigo. "But it is possible his agent, who works in the English market, could have contact with Everton.
"We have been very clear with Joey. It is up to him to make the decision."
The former Manchester City and Newcastle player spent the entire 2012-13 season on loan at Marseille, making 25 appearances in Ligue 1.
Marseille finished as runners-up to champions Paris Saint-Germain and the club's chairman, Vincent Labrune, reiterated that they are waiting to hear whether Barton will return to them on a long-term basis.
"Barton? We made him a proposition, but he has to cancel his contract with QPR. It all depends on him."
