Joao Moutinho's fine free-kick got the visitors back on level terms in the 13th minute, cancelling out Antoine Devaux's fourth-minute header, but they could not force a winner - despite the 87th-minute dismissal of Reims defender Atila Turan.

Both goalkeepers pulled off some fine saves in the second half to ensure the spoils were shared, meaning Monaco finished the weekend top of the pile - ahead of Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference.

Ranieri felt it was a point gained rather than two dropped for his expensively-assembled squad.

He told L'Equipe: "For the third game in a week, it was very good. There was a lot of intensity.

"Both teams wanted to win and a draw seems fair. I'm not disappointed. For me, the first thing is work, the result comes second, and the players have worked hard.

"There were mistakes, but that is normal.

"When you cannot win, it's important not to lose. We didn't lose, we're top of the table, that's fine.

"Reims won against PSG and Lyon last year and already against Lille and Lyon this year."

Reims coach Hubert Fournier, whose side are 10th, was equally satisfied but called on his players to replicate the same level of performance against the lesser lights in Ligue 1.

"The players have to perform like this every weekend, and always put in this intensity," he said.

"It takes hard work in every game, not just against the big boys."
