Payet played a starring role last season for Les Dogues, filling the shoes of the departed Eden Hazard on their left wing. OM announced he had signed for them last night, subject to him passing a medical.

"The prospect of the 2014 World Cup was a key element in my thinking, but not the only one. I wanted to stay in France," he told Marseille's official website from his holiday on the Indian Ocean island of Petite-Ile.

"Throughout my career, I have always favoured the sporting choice. Thinking about 2014 is good, but with OM it's also about playing in the Champions League, the chance to evolve in a quality group of players and to achieve high goals in the league. The challenge is raised, it is already exciting.

"Marseille's history speaks for itself, it is full of titles and emotions. The club is a monument in French sport."

e could release Diaby and then re-sign him when nobody else does and he would literally be like a new signing.
