Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Feeling good again after win in midweek

The reigning champions were frustrated to be held to a 1-1 draw at home to title rivals Monaco last Sunday, and then were made to dig deep to grind out a 1-0 win at lowly Valenciennes on Wednesday night.

A third game in six days is a tall order for the capital side, who trail Monaco by two points at the summit, but PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic hopes the battling nature of their midweek win will restore some of the confidence lost in the Monaco game.

"I feel really good after this win, even if it wasn't our best performance of the season," the Sweden international said.

"It's very important to win this type of match. We lost two points against Monaco and tonight we got all three and we needed them. It's very good for the confidence."

PSG coach Laurent Blanc admitted his players are already feeling the strain of this week's busy fixture schedule.

"We dug deep into our reserves against Monaco so it's tough to try and reproduce the same type of performance three days later," he said.

"It was a very difficult match and the players are very tired. We will try and recover now because we have another tough game in three days' time against Toulouse."

Leaders Monaco have an extra day to recover and visit mid-table Reims on Sunday night with the club still waiting for a player other than Radamel Falcao or Emmanuel Riviere to score in the league this season.

Falcao and Riviere have combined to score all 13 league goals for Monaco so far, and both were on target in a 3-0 triumph over Bastia on Wednesday, leading coach Claudio Ranieri to admit: "Maybe we are dependent on Falcao and Riviere, but I am satisfied if they score."

Sunday's other games see Rennes play host to Nantes and Ajaccio welcome Montpellier.

On Saturday, bottom side Sochaux will entertain second-bottom Valenciennes without coach Eric Hely at the helm after he offered his resignation following Wednesday's 5-1 loss at promoted Guingamp.

Sochaux club president Laurent Pernet confirmed on Thursday that although he had accepted Hely's decision, he will remain in the managerial set-up in another capacity. It was not immediately clear who would be in the dugout on Saturday.

Third-placed Marseille will look to bridge the three-point gap to Monaco when they visit Lorient, while fourth-placed Lille visit a Lyon side who suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to Ajaccio in midweek.

Struggling Bordeaux will look to haul themselves out of the relegation zone when they make the trip to Evian, while Nice are at home to Guingamp and Bastia visit St Etienne.

till reckon Chelsea will go for Khedira as back up for Matic. I think it will turn out to be quite a Mourihno-y window: We'll see the squad players and youth in action pre-season, say things like well, we need not buy anybody and then the club will bid £60m for Pogba and send everybody on loan.

would love to be a fly on the wall at the meeting between Milner and Rodgers. I don't know if flies can count, but if they can then I would be counting the number of times Rodgers used the word outstanding in his attempts to get Milner to sign.

Reds and Arsenal chase Milner

W

ell, it wouldn't be a summer without Arsenal fans fretting over losing a key player, and United throwing their weight around and muscling in on transfer deals which are (apparently) near to completion. If we can't be entertained by the football on the pitch, let's enjoy the silly off-pitch soap opera of the transfer season. Hurrah!
