Ligue 1 weekend preview

Paris Saint-Germain defender Alex believes there is considerable room for improvement from new coach Laurent Blanc's side in the wake of an unimpressive start to the defence of their Ligue 1 title.

Although PSG are unbeaten from their opening four matches, with two draws followed by two wins, the manner of the team's performances have hardly been inspiring.

Last time out at home against Guingamp, PSG required two injury-time goals to defeat the newly-promoted side 2-0.

PSG are first up this weekend when they travel to Bordeaux on Friday, and former Chelsea centre-back Alex knows they have to start raising their game.

"We know we must improve," said Alex.

"Although we won our last two matches, there is room for improvement.

"We've a complicated programme now with this match in Bordeaux and then the Champions League (at Olympiakos on Tuesday), so we have to do better.

"The important thing, as they say, is the three points, but we expect better of ourselves."

Fourth-placed PSG can go top with a victory, albeit for potentially 24 hours only as second-placed Marseille head to bottom-of-the-table Toulouse on Saturday, whilst third-placed St Etienne will be looking to maintain their solid league start on the road at Valenciennes.

St Etienne defender Bayal Sall said: "With nine points from four games we can be happy. Unlike other seasons, we have started well.

"But no game will be easy this season. We'll be expected to do well everywhere, so we must stay focused and have confidence in ourselves."

Along with Toulouse, Ajaccio and Sochaux are the only other two teams without a league victory to their name this season.

Ajaccio, who have only scored one goal in their four matches, are at home to Evian, whilst Sochaux travel to Nantes.

Ajaccio midfielder Johan Cavalli has called on the supporters to play their part in lifting the team to victory at the Stade Francois Coty.

Cavalli said: "I would like to ask the fans to be present until the last minute, which is important if we are to achieve this first victory together."

Other Saturday matches see Guingamp, currently in the bottom three, at home to Bastia, who have lost both of their away matches without scoring, whilst Reims travel to Montpellier.

On Sunday, should Monaco be deposed from top spot, they will have the chance to reclaim the leadership when they host Lorient, another team without a point or a goal on the road.

Nice head to Lille, whilst the late kick-off sees fourth-placed Rennes travel to Lyon, who have lost their past four games - two apiece in the league and Champions League - after winning the first four.

put Ince in my fantasy football team, so it's no surprise at all really. I do that to players. Also responsible for De Jong and Upson being injured. Think I'll transfer in Di Maria just to ruin United....
