The centre-back, who underwent a liver transplant in 2012, missed the Ligue 1 club's last two matches due to a viral infection that saw him briefly hospitalised as well as Les Bleus' friendly win against Holland at the Stade de France.

Monaco head coach Claudio Ranieri expects Abidal to return to the side to face Lyon this Sunday.

"My personal objective is to play the World Cup and I have faith," said the former Barcelona star. "Before the last international friendly I had a phone call from (national coach) Didier Deschamps and I told him that I was not fit. He appreciated my honesty.

"Now I have to work hard to be part of 23-man squad. I believe I can make the World Cup. I know what I am capable of and I showed it early in the season. I had a difficult period, but these things can happen."

With Abidal's contract running out this summer, the 34-year-old admits he could either sign a contract extension with the principality outfit or become an ambassador.

"The chairman (Dmitry Rybolovlev) trusts me and I want to go on," he said. "Will I go on playing next term? I don't know. There could be injuries and I will be 35-year-old.

"You can still have desire but no legs and so I guess a choice has to be made. But it is not the right time for me to make a choice."
