Dani Alves: Thinks more can be done to combat racism

Alves pointed to apparently racist chanting during last night's 1-1 draw away to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final, and said he has not seen nearly enough done to tackle the problem during his time in Spain.

"I know people are trying to fight it but we still hear it," the Brazilian said. "For me it is a lost war. I have been in Spain for 10 years and it has happened since day one.

"We need to take drastic measures, and punish the clubs more harsly, not just a 1,000 or 2,000 euro fine.

"We should go further. Sometimes you have to look for examples, and when this happens in England the sanctions are much stronger."

Barcelona took the lead last night through Cesc Fabregas in the 50th minute, but Raphael Varane headed in an equaliser nine minutes from time to leave the visitors frustrated.

"We did not take advantage of all the opportunities we had and now the tie will be decided at home," Alves said, according to Barcelona's club website.

"It will be a wonderful opportunity for us. We deserved to win and to return from Madrid with a better result."

e're our own worst enemy. We're suicidal in defence, and we may just get slaughtered on Sunday. Other than that, I am very pleased with my team.
