Ramos currently has 99 caps for his country but looks certain to reach three figures in the next week with Spain facing Finland on Friday and France the following Tuesday in a key World Cup qualifying double-header.

If he does feature in one of those games, Ramos will become the eighth Spanish player to achieve the milestone, joining a rapidly growing group that includes five of his contemporaries - Iker Casillas, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres and Carles Puyol - and the 26-year-old admits it will be a proud moment for him.

He said in AS: "It will be something to enjoy on a personal level. I hope I can enter into the history books of Spanish football. For me it's something to be proud of and a very big personal challenge.

"I've been in the national team for a long time and I'm proud of that. Hopefully I can say in the future that I've played many more games than 100."

Reigning world and European champions Spain head into the latest round of World Cup qualifiers lying level on seven points with France at the top of Group I.

Next Tuesday's clash between the two European superpowers in Paris could go a long way to deciding which nation finishes in first place, but Ramos has pointed out that this week's encounter with last-placed Finland is a crucial fixture as well.

"We're very aware that they are two games that have a lot riding on them, we are playing to get through to the World Cup and we want to do things well," said Ramos.

"We can't underestimate anyone because these days any national team can hurt you. After that we will think about France."

ell that really inspires me with confidence. No point in training, deciding on a coherent formation, or playing players in their best positions, let's just hope we get lucky.

alcao really needs to shine now. Apparently according to the stats, he scores more when played up front alone. I wonder if Van Gaal will actually apply a formation to get the best out of him though.
