The build-up to the first Derby della Lanterna of the new season, from which both sides needed a first Serie A win, was shrouded in intrigue as camouflaged Genoa coach Luca de Pra was caught hiding in a wood next to Sampdoria's training ground earlier this week.

De Pra, the nephew of famous Genoa goalkeeper Giovanni De Pra, was chased away while his club disavowed all knowledge of espionage tactics.

But Genoa's players were certainly well informed about their opponents' weaknesses on the night with Luca Antonini, Emanuele Calaio and Francesco Lodi all producing goals of real quality to break their club's duck for the season.

Lazio's players responded to an organised protest from disgruntled fans in the best way possible by strolling to a dominant 3-0 victory over Chievo in Rome.

Biancoceleste supporters expressed their disappointment over the club's perceived failures in the summer transfer market by leaving the Curva Nord empty for the start of Sunday's game.

A move for Galatasaray's Burak Yilmaz broke down before Libor Kozak was sold to Aston Villa - but first-half strikes from Antonio Candreva, Luis Cavanda and Senad Lulic proved there are still goals throughout the team.

The capital club have now taken six points from three games while Chievo are yet to win a match.

Fiorentina's perfect start to the season was ended by a late Mauricio Pinilla goal, which earned Cagliari a 1-1 draw in Florence.

Borja Valero gave the hosts the lead in the 71st minute and they seemed to be heading for a third straight win until substitute Pinilla headed the Sardinians level with a minute remaining.

Fiorentina also lost David Pizarro to a red card in stoppage time and both Juan Cuadrado and Mario Gomez to injuries.

Colombian winger Cuadrado dislocated his shoulder while German striker Gomez will miss six weeks with knee ligament damage.

Antonio Di Natale marked his 300th Serie A appearance for Udinese with a late goal to salvage a point from a 1-1 draw with Bologna.

The 35-year-old notched his 159th league goal for the north-east club after Alessandro Diamanti's free-kick had put Bologna on track for their first win of the new season.

Livorno picked up their second successive win at the expense of Catania, with a brace from Paulinho deciding a 2-0 victory in Tuscany.

The Brazilian forward struck in the 66th and 72nd minutes to leave Catania rooted to the bottom following their third straight defeat.

Elsewhere, Hellas Verona condemned fellow promoted side Sassuolo to their third consecutive defeat in the top flight as Raphael Martinho and Romulo scored in a 2-0 win.

Roma visit Parma on Monday night with a view to claiming a third straight win to join Napoli at the top of the table.

Rafael Benitez's side beat Atalanta 2-0 on Saturday with AC Milan claiming a 2-2 draw at Torino after the Derby d'Italia between Inter Milan and Juventus ended 1-1 at San Siro.

lassic management. Build them up and then knock them back. Raise expectations and then dampen them. Create a dynamic where by you demand the most from your team, but where the team are given room to manoeuvre unexpected or unwanted results. Classy work by Van Gaal, he really reminds me a lot of me. A smart cookie, make no doubt.
