Kehl hoping for Real repeat

Sebastian Kehl believes Borussia Dortmund are on course to realise their goals for the campaign and says it would be "a bonus" to repeat last season's Champions League win over Real Madrid.

Sebastian Kehl: Feels Dortmund will be underdogs against Real Madrid

The Dortmund captain claims finishing second in the league, which Bayern Munich have already won, is the number one priority. Reaching the final of Germany's cup competition, the DFB-Pokal, would be another notable achievement for the Westphalians.

"Then we would have reached all of our goals," Kehl told Kicker magazine. "We have already gone as far as we planned in the Champions League, and all that comes next is a bonus."

Yet Dortmund head to Spain for their European quarter-final this week, knowing that in 2012/13 they had the measure of Madrid.

Kehl and his team-mates head into the first leg of the Champions League tie as underdogs, although the 4-1 home win and aggregate semi-final victory 12 months ago should give them belief of a repeat this time around.

"We're in an excellent condition physically, but of course we know that Real are not the same side we faced last year," Kehl said.

"They are the absolute favourites, together with Bayern Munich, to win the Champions League.

"But we showed last year that we can beat them and they won't have forgotten that."

Much of the credit for last season's semi-final victory went to striker Robert Lewandowski, who will miss Wednesday's first leg at Madrid's Bernabeu stadium due to suspension.

Kehl said: "His four goals against Real last season all came at home and if he can do the same again on April 8, then we've just got to ensure we've done enough before for that to take us through."
