yesiricanboogie, agreed. I thought when he shouldered him it was going to be a penalty especially with Refs in europe and at the the Bernabeu but he didn't give either decision as you said evened out. I don't think it was a penalty but it could have been given by a fussy Ref but I thought he did a decent job last night.

I think the Varane/Evra challenge was too far out to have been classified a goal scoring opportunity, and there was a covering defender as well, but it would have been nice to get a free kick. A challenge doesn't have to be deliberate to be a foul. But hey, you can't win them all. I'm just glad it didn't have a direct influence on something more important, like another Madrid goal.

@kobela48 & Harry...I too am surprised. Not that noone mentioned the evra incident, but the fact that fergie didn't mention it at all in his post match comments, or did every newspaper miss that he did?? Usually he's spitting in the face of some reporter about any incident that stops utd from winning, why not last night? Does he only save those moments for domestic games?? Hmmmm

Fergie also said about the header that messi wouldnt do that. No red nose all messi does is hang in the air and place a sublime header over the great van der sar that settles the champions league final

Fair play to United, thought you'd get stuffed when the draw was made but you were excellent last night. As far as the Varane thing goes (Harry & Kobela) I thought it was a foul and a yellow tops, nothing malicious, only slightly late and the other defender (Ramos?) would've been back to cover. Less surprised by no-one mentioning the shoulder charge/push by Jones that, on balance, probably should've been a pen. Wouldn't have been in the Prem but you'd usually get punished for that in Europe. Still, swings and roundabouts and, as neither was given, no-one can really complain. Looking forward to the 2nd leg, be interesting to see what Fergie does, more of the same or does he go for it? If it's the latter we could be looking at one of the games of the decade. Hoping you get done though obviously!!

Was I the only one who thought Rafael did a fine job. Ozil tooled him, especially in the first half Rafael always seemed to be caught out of position thanks to shadowing Ronaldo who kept drifting to the center (which I would assume was a Madrid tactic to exploit Rafael) and Ozil and Di Maria often used to drift into that space. Unlike Valencia, Rooney didn't double down as effectively to aid the young lad.

He looked a lot better after the break and I wasn't surprised Ronaldo decided to switch wings with Di Maria and take on Evra or go centrally, rather than torment Rafael (why would he do that if he was having so much success?). Rafael continued to struggle against the Ozil who seemed to have his number, but did fine against Di Maria who he kept away from the box.

Lets be clear, nobody is stopping Ronaldo, Di Maria or Ozil one on one and I honestly thought Rafael did a fine job as part of the defensive backline and will only get better in the second leg.

Good game. Judging from around the office today, Pool, Arsenal and Everton fans were behind us which is good to see when a rival domestic club plays in Europe. I`ll be right behind Arsenal next week and was behind Pool in Istanbul (though I felt dirty afterwards) Ronaldo could still have the final say but I thought Di Maria was the best Real player on the pitch last night

kobela48, I too am surprised that the Varane challenge has not been mentioned. I'm not 100% convinced that it should have been a red. "The last man" is not mentioned in the rules of the game, so cannot be used as fodder against the match officials. It was, however, a clumsy, and quite deliberate challenge that merited at least a yellow. As it was, it did not even get penalised at all. I was also irritated that Van Persie got booked for raising an arm, which Ramos went down for, whilst Ramos got nothing for elbowing him in the head. I do hope the referee returns the favours in the next leg.

Can't believe noone commented on the fact that Varane should've shown a red card for that challenge on Evra when he was clean through.

I'm a Liverpool fan, but (as a neutral) thought the game was great. Think it can be summarised as Real Madrid were probably the better team (in football terms) but in reality Man Utd could actually have won the game by 2 clear goals. Rafael was a liability the Madrid players were fighting over who could be on his side, rest of the back 4 were fantastic. Midfield were over run first half but were great in the second half. Van Persie on another day scores 3!! If the second leg is as open it should be a cracker!!

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.
