Wenger refuses to give up

Arsene Wenger admitted Arsenal will have to make 'the impossible, possible' if they are to overcome a first-leg humbling by Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

@parklanespurs - sure, most Arsenal fans didn't start the season hoping that 4th place would be most the Gunners could achieve, but in life you have to reassess your aspirations every now and again. When I was in a band in my 20s I hoped to be a millionaire and living the good life by now. Getting dumped out of the FA Cup by Blackburn was pretty awful, last night was worse... but if Arsenal make it to an umpteenth season in the Champs League then revenue will come in and quality players will want to play for Arsenal. If we get 5th place that dream starts to fall apart. Therefore, while it hurts to fail on a number of levels, setting yourself a goal of 4th place with the prize it brings isn't too shabby. As a Spurs supporter I'd bet you'd say that grabbing 4th place would be a bloody good result for the season... or are your expectations lower than that of Arsenal fans?

@lanskymob you have to be successfull first to become the next Liverpool, your a laughing stock your managers press conference yest just confirmed that, feel sorry for Wilshere Vermalen players that genuinley deserve to be at a decent club.

That's exactly the problem @nickbeggs, for the majority of your loyal fans, your season is over... However You and Arsene seem quite happy with your 4th place success. The whole time you see your best players leave, the team gets weaker and weaker and your prices go up and up... I assume you will be renewing your (most expensive in Europe) season ticket next year? Do you ever get the feeling you are being mugged-off by your own Club?

@umhahahahe - since when did the English language regress to the point where we say "ye" instead of "you"? Forsooth's sake..

Throw away the lack of spending. Throw away the faith in 17 year olds. Throw away the sales of our best players. The fact that Wenger started a midget speedster alone in the middle against those centerbacks shows that he has no comprehension of tactics. Giroud should have started up front, Theo on the right. And that's just the beginning. Arsene, your dangerous game of "being 4th in the league is better than a trophy" is in real danger of unraveling. What top player would come here, for any price, if they're not playing CL football? We're dangerously close to being the next Liverpool. And the worst thing is, the writing's been on the wall for some time. the cash has been in the bank, the means have been there, but the foolishness of the board to allow AW to continue his stubborn ways has nearly sunk our great club.

Thank god Liverpool fans are here to advise us on "joke fans". I bow to their superior knowledge in this matter.

Bayern could field Kahn Matias and Beckenbaur and still give Arsenal a beat down, its simple they are not that good, their fans a joke not supporting the team at all always seem to be on the players back, recall be 1 down at half time to Liverpool booing the players off the pitch then chanting some rubbish song about them been the best team in the world when they got it back to 2-2, their manager is your typical arrogant french man, and apart from Wilshere who is world class their players have no fight...Theo Walcott sums up everything wrong with Arsenal...no bottle, no heart and goes hiding when the chips are down, just like their supporters

I have to ask (and this isn't some kind of tribal ribbing via a comments section, this is a genuine question) - Has Wenger become, in gooner eyes as well as the rest of us, delusional? I ask because "spirit and mental strength" are not things I've associated with an Arsenal team for many years. Indeed, it appears to be the key traits they have lacked.

Don't forget Arsene previously said 180 mins to play to qualify. Bayern only needed 90 mins. So the other 90 mins Arsene will dress up as a clown in Germany during match to show his " mental strength " . Does Premier League have fit and proper person test for its managers ??? We need to know whether Wenger is still sane to manage the club . If anyone in his position who is sane and has respect for himself will resign after 7 years of humiliations . Oh sorry I meant 8 years..
