Andy Saull: Will join Newcastle in the summer

A terrible run of injuries coupled with the form of Will Fraser means Saull has gone from England hopeful to the the forgotten man of Saracens.

The talented 24-year-old openside has managed just 322 minutes of league action this season - and Saull is hoping that the move to the Falcons, were he will be reunited with mentor John Wells and former Saracens Adam Powell and Noah Cato, will reignite his career.

However having been at Saracens since he was a schoolboy and made 121 appearances, Saull wants to play his part in the club's hunt for silverware before he packs his bags and heads north.

Saracens will tackle Toulon in the Heineken Cup semi-final on Sunday, while they are also in the the Premiership play-offs once again

And with Fraser having suffered a shoulder injury, Saull could just get his wish.

"I'd love to be involved," he told Sky Sports. "I've been here since I was 15, so that is almost 10 years now. I owe such a huge debt to everyone here.

"I'd love to play from a personal point of view. It would be brilliant to be on the pitch at the end of a final.

"In the past I have been subbed off, while I got injured in the last one so I haven't been on when the final whistle goes. To experience that with the lads here would be amazing."

A winners' medal would be the perfect hurrah for Saull ahead of his move to the Falcons.

But the switch is not without risks with Newcastle currently in the RFU Championship. However Dean Richards' men won all barring one of their league games and are hot favourites to win the play-offs and return to the top-flight.

Influence

Saull is confident that Newcastle can help revive his international ambitions.

"The thinking behind the move was it was a chance to be part of a good squad," said Saull.

"Dean Richards has done wonderful stuff at Leicester, Harlequins and now Newcastle, while I've known John Wells for years as he was my mentor coming through the England academies and he has been an incredible influence on my career.

"I wasn't getting enough game time at Saracens for a variety of reasons, what with injuries and the form of others, so I had a look around and Newcastle seem to be best placed for me.

"When I got a run of 10 games at Saracens I would get mentioned for England. I need that regular run of games and I think Dean and John will bring the best out of me."

Saull, though, faces a fight for the No 7 shirt at Kingston Park - with Falcons captain Will Welch having impressed on the openside during the club's charge towards promotion.

However Saull is relishing the contest and he believes that Newcastle will benefit.

"I believe he is a multi-talented guy and can play elsewhere, whereas I am just a seven," added Saull.

"Hopefully we can play together but rugby is full of challenges like this and it can only be good for the club to have this competition for places."

Andy Saull was speaking at a QBE Rugby Pro event with Upminster RFC, on behalf of QBE, the Official Business Insurance Partner of Premiership Rugby. For exclusive rugby news, video and blogs please visit www.QBErugby.com
