Steven Caulker: Hoping to keep Miroslav Klose quiet when Spurs face Lazio

Caulker was expected to play a bit-part role at Spurs this season, but some excellent pre-season form, and an injury to Younes Kaboul mean the 20-year-old has become a regular at the heart of the team's defence so far this season.

So impressive were his performances at the Olympics over the summer that England manager Roy Hodgson called the centre-back into his squad for the Three Lions' friendly against Italy in August.

Caulker, who was on loan at Swansea last season, then went on to earn his first cap in last week's friendly in Sweden and he is determined to fill the void left in the national squad by John Terry.

And with Germany striker Klose - a man who has caused England and English domestic teams so many problems in the past - facing him in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night, the defender hopes he can prove to Hodgson that he deserves to extend his stay in the Three Lions squad.

"Every game in a Spurs shirt is a chance to prove myself at international level," said Caulker.

"Lazio have a German striker in Klose so I have a chance to prove myself again and get my place back in the England squad."
