Ferdinand was named in Roy Hodgson's 26-man squad to take on San Marino and Montenegro in this month's World Cup qualifying double-header on Thursday.
The Manchester United centre-back's last cap came against Switzerland in June 2011 but Hodgson has hinted he could be back in the side in Serravalle on March 22nd.
Ferdinand has been in good form for his club this season, helping United to the top of the Premier League.
Former Spurs centre-half King, who won 21 caps for England during his playing days, believes the defender is deserving of his recall to the Three Lions fold.
"Rio's had a great season. Man United are top of the league at the moment," he told Sky Sports.
"It's good that he's been fit this season. He's played as many games as I can remember in recent years and that's made a big difference.
"You can see his quality. He's been as good as anyone, I suppose, this season."
