Roy Hodgson: England down to seventh in the world

Roy Hodgson's side could only manage a 1-1 draw with Montenegro in their most recent World Cup qualifier, failing to follow up the easy 8-0 thrashing of minnows San Marino a few days earlier.

That result was enough to see England drop behind Croatia, who move up five places to fourth, and fifth-ranked Portugal with the top three - Spain, Germany and Argentina - remaining unchanged.

Draws with Austria and Sweden moved the Republic of Ireland up to 39th and Wales are one of the bigger risers with their 2-1 win over Scotland and a home defeat by Croatia seeing them move up from 71st to 49th.

The Scots, who were one of the first teams ruled out of contention for the 2014 World Cup finals, plunge 11 places to 77th but the most chastening fallers are Northern Ireland, who drop from 98th to 119th.

That puts them behind such nations as Antigua and Barbuda, Suriname and Tajikistan in football's world order.
