Gerrard, who is also the Three Lions skipper, will turn 34 in May - and Rodgers expects the summer tournament to be his international swansong.

The Reds midfielder has won 107 caps for his country to date since making his England debut under Kevin Keegan in 2000.

Although Rodgers appreciates Gerrard may decide to play on for his country, he feels at this stage that the player is minded to hang up his England boots following the World Cup.

"I think it's something he will assess and look at," said Rodgers. "If you go to a World Cup in Brazil at 34 years of age, you might not have many more championships left in you. Very few players do. I can think of (Javier) Zanetti and (Paolo) Maldini who have played on late, but it's rare.

"Steven is a real talisman for the group. He is a real leader for the team and everyone there."

With Gerrard named in Roy Hodgson's latest squad for the November friendlies against Chile and Germany, Rodgers was then asked if he would prefer him to be rested for the two Wembley clashes.

The Liverpool boss replied: "Whether he plays in the two friendlies or not is another matter. There are absolutely times when you can rest him and I think that's important for him.

"For Steven, he probably looks at it as though this is his last international year and after the World Cup, that will be all finished and he will have time to rest.

"He and Roy have a good relationship and I'm sure if he needs a breather in these two games, he will get it."

Should Gerrard appear in both England's November friendlies, he would overtake Bobby Moore and be behind only Peter Shilton and David Beckham in the all-time Three Lions appearances list.

ood lord that's got me unnecessarily excited. Damn you Storey. Cut to Liverpool being crushed under the wheels of Sparky's Stoke Machine and Firmino brought off the bench to no effect. It's the hope that kills you.

think he'll do quite well. My only reservation would be Kagawa, who had similar stats to Firmino in the bundesliga before he came, but time will tell.
