Andros Townsend: Knows club form is the key to World Cup selection

The 22-year-old winger was one of the few players to have impressed during Tuesday night's 1-0 defeat by Germany at Wembley and has emerged as a first-choice selection for the national side.

Townsend was influential in helping secure victories over Montenegro and Poland in England's final two World Cup qualifiers, and hopes to have played his way into Roy Hodgson's provisional 30-man squad for Brazil when the next friendly - against Denmark in March - comes around.

"The (England) manager has seen me play for Tottenham and just told me to go and replicate that form, and that is what I am trying to do," he said.

"Every time I got the ball against Germany, I was trying to attack and make things happen. Hopefully I can continue to do that."

Tottenham have made a strange start to the current campaign - they are only five points off leaders Arsenal but have scored just nine goals in their 11 league fixtures so far.

They were beaten at home by Newcastle United in their final game before the international break and Townsend knows the focus has to be on club football now.

"Everyone has to put England to one side now and focus on club form, because that is what is going to get people on that plane," he said.

"We just have to focus on playing well for our clubs, and then back on England again in March.

"I think I have done myself justice with the four caps so far, but now, like everyone, attention turns to your club football, how well you can play there.

"I have made a good start, but there is still a long way to go."
