Andy Carroll: Happy to be back and determined to make World Cup squad

Carroll is finally back to fitness after eight months out with a heel problem and, after coming off the bench in last weekend's win at Cardiff City, could be set for his first start of the season against former club Newcastle United on Saturday.

He is determined to keep the Hammers in the Premier League and has also set his sights on going to Brazil with the national team at the end of the season.

The striker has made just nine appearances for his country, spread across three years, but he believes there is still an opportunity to make Roy Hodgson's squad.

He said: "Of course the World Cup is massive and everybody wants to be involved. It's in my head that there's still a chance for me to go (to Brazil), and I'd be devastated if I missed out, to be honest.

"It was great to be away at the Euros, playing with the best players in Europe. Now I've got to work hard and I'll have a chance of playing with the best in the world.

"That's a great incentive for me to do as well as I possibly can for West Ham."

West Ham have struggled in Carroll's absence and he admits it has been one of the most difficult periods of his career, but he hopes the corner has now been turned.

"For me, it's been tough being out for so long, and it's been disappointing for the team not doing so well," he said.

"I just want to stay fit, as every player does. I've been plagued with injuries, but I'm just going to forget about that now. I'm not going to worry about injuries at all, play in the games and try to do well, create chances, score goals and get us well clear of the bottom."
