Adam Johnson: On target against Newcastle

The Sunderland winger's form has been sensational in recent weeks, and he is hoping he can impress Roy Hodgson - having previously suggested he had given up hope of making the World Cup squad/

Hodgson is set to watch Sunderland take on Hull in the Premier League this weekend, and Johnson will look to press his claims along with the likes of Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore.

Former Middlesbrough winger Johnson has not been involved for England since moving to the Stadium of Light from Manchester City in 2012. His last involvement came in the build up to Euro 2012 - but he failed to make the final cut under Hodgson.

He admits he is hungry to return to the Three Lions fold and said: "Of course, I have missed it. The best thing of all is to play for England.

"A few months ago, I didn't think I had a chance but maybe I do now."

After Johnson scored in Sunderland's weekend win at Newcastle, Black Cats boss Gus Poyet highlighted his belief that the system they were playing suited the 26-year-old - and he agrees.

"Gus Poyet likes his team playing higher up the pitch and he likes to get attacking players on the ball," said Johnson, who made his international debut in May 2010 and has won 11 caps to date.

"That system suits wingers better. A lot of the time in the past, I had to run 70 yards with the ball just to get into a dangerous position. Now I'm much fresher."

he uber commercialisation of the 90s has led to the point where this overly familar, try hard, jolly hockey sticks type fronts up a major football match on a weekly basis. Unlike the great presenters of yesteryear, I doubt he would even recognise the scent of Brut.

onfirmed. Nick Miller is a douche bag. Lazy, incoherent rant is what this article should be titled. And for the editor to have the temerity to pass this as acceptable writing is shocking. Ah well, anything for clicks right? You got mine. Well done. Your mother must be proud.
