Door still open for Commons

Scotland assistant manager Mark McGhee believes Kris Commons could still have a future in international football.

Kris Commons: Could be urged to play for Scotland again, according to Mark McGhe

The Celtic midfielder announced last week that he no longer wished to be considered for Scotland duty because he wanted to concentrate on his family and club career.

His decision has been respected by Scotland's managerial team but McGhee thinks boss Gordon Strachan may approach Commons next year to offer him a return to the squad.

Scotland still have a number of games to play in their doomed World Cup qualifying campaign but will then turn their focus to the European Championship in 2016 and McGhee hopes Commons will be involved.

"I could see Gordon being proactive in a year before the next qualifiers," McGhee said in the Daily Record.

"If we think Kris is an important player who can help us then we have every right to bang on his door.

"And if he says no, he's still not ready, then nothing is lost. Gordon has left it open to him, which is important.

"Kris played very well in the Scottish Cup final and I was left wishing he hadn't made that decision. But maybe when things are better in his mind he will come back."

Commons' pride and ambition has been questioned by SFA performance director Mark Wotte, but McGhee says the player does not deserve to be criticised.

He said: "Kris and any player is within his right to make that decision. He knows his mind and his circumstances."

think that puts all doubts over Benteke's quality to bed. Can he do it after receiving the ball to feet, in the box, totally unmarked, on a warm, sunny afternoon in Swindon? Oh yes he can! This year is definitely Liverpool's year. YNWA.

ll very well selling all midfield and strikers but unless we bring anyone in that is better than what we had then it will be a terrible transfer window in my view. Sorted out the defense but our midfield and striker options look very light.

ove it when Jose accuses others of being defensive, cynical and playing to win. If I was Wenger, I'd get that quote laminated and framed - surely the biggest compliment he's ever received from Mourinho. You've got him riled Arsene - you're relevant again!
