Aiden McGeady: Ireland winger expects Faroe Islands to provide a tough test

Giovanni Trapattoni's men are locked in a battle with Sweden and Austria to finish second behind Germany in Group C of the World Cup qualifiers.

Although goal difference could play a part come the end of the campaign, McGeady believes winning the match is simply the priority for Ireland.

"You don't want to disrespect the Faroes - it was a tough game when we played there and Sweden had a tough game there as well," the 27-year-old said.

"First of all, we just want to win. If we can get some goals, then that would be nice, but first and foremost it's just trying to get the three points because it won't be easy.

"You look at when Sweden played them - they were drawing 1-1 up until the last five, 10 minutes of the game away from home.

"You are expected to go there and beat the Faroes like it's a pretty easy game, but it's not. These guys will play football and they can make it very difficult for you.

"The first half especially for us over there was difficult. We played okay and we got some goals in the end, but the pressure is obviously going to be on us on Friday."

lassic management. Build them up and then knock them back. Raise expectations and then dampen them. Create a dynamic where by you demand the most from your team, but where the team are given room to manoeuvre unexpected or unwanted results. Classy work by Van Gaal, he really reminds me a lot of me. A smart cookie, make no doubt.
