Stephen Ireland: Enjoying his football again during loan spell at Stoke

The midfielder has spent six years in exile, with a problem of his own making leading to him being frozen out by the Republic of Ireland.

Ireland is, however, hoping that a reversal in fortune at club level will bring him back into the Irish fold.

Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane have taken the reins of the Ireland national team, offering a clean slate and a fresh start to those at their disposal.

Catching the eye during a season-long stint at Stoke could force Ireland back into the reckoning, with the 27-year-old hoping to put the troubles of his past behind him.

He said: "I've started four games and I want to make sure I start the next 10 or 15, but at the back of my mind is Ireland.

"I would like to get together with Martin or Roy and have a chat.

"Euro qualifying doesn't start until next September and so I have some time to think about that.

"They are two great men who are very determined and have achieved a lot in their own careers.

"Roy Keane is an absolute legend in football and Martin O'Neill has done well wherever he has gone.

"I think the FAI and football in Ireland is going in the right direction because there's a lot of good players."

was there, it was embarrassing - the team looked totally unbalanced from the off, the defence was woeful and when Mikel came off injured it got even worse with nobody in front of them. Up front on several occasions we had opportunities and nobody would shoot - it was a complete farse! On the back of Salah's performance I'm glad there is talk of getting shot...
