Swansea have confirmed Ferrie Bodde is to undergo a knee operation amid fears the midfielder may be forced to call time on his career.
The Dutchman has been out of action since 2008 when he ruptured a cruciate ligament just months into the Swans' Championship campaign after winning promotion from League One.
Midfielder Bodde played an influential role as Swansea won the League One title and continued to impress in the Championship before picking up the injury against Birmingham.
However, having started recovery and stepped up to play for the club's reserves last week against Arsenal, Bodde suffered a further setback with a serious injury to his opposite knee.
"Ferrie Bodde is set to go under the surgeon's scalpel for a third knee operation," a club statement confirmed.
"The Dutchman limped off after just two minutes of Swansea's reserve game against Arsenal last week after stepping up his comeback from a long-standing knee problem that has kept him out for virtually three years.
"While the latest injury is in the other knee, his surgeon has confirmed ligament damage that will require an operation in three to four weeks' time.
"However, the full extent of the injury cannot be fully diagnosed until the swelling has reduced significantly around the knee."
Bodde has returned home to Holland where it is expected he will undergo the surgery but there are concerns the 29-year-old will have to call time on his career following this latest injury.
