Gareth Southgate: England Under 21s face Lithuania in October

Southgate takes charge of his first game on Thursday as the Young Lions' European Championship qualifying campaign commences against Moldova at the Madejski Stadium.

England then face Finland next Monday before qualification continues in October with a trip to San Marino ahead of Lithuania's visit to Ipswich.

"I'm really looking forward to this game," Southgate said. "Whenever we take our games all around the country, the reaction of supporters has been brilliant.

"I think we'll be seeing an exciting group of young players who people will look forward to going to watch. It's great news for us because I think we'll get a very good crowd there, they'll be very supportive.

"They've got a crowd that are knowledgeable about their football too, so that will be a real lift for us as a team."

Southgate could be forced to make additions to his squad for the Moldova match with Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and Sunderland striker Connor Wickham having withdrawn because of unspecified injuries.

Shelvey will also miss the Finland tie but Wickham could return to the squad after being assessed by club doctors.

was there, it was embarrassing - the team looked totally unbalanced from the off, the defence was woeful and when Mikel came off injured it got even worse with nobody in front of them. Up front on several occasions we had opportunities and nobody would shoot - it was a complete farse! On the back of Salah's performance I'm glad there is talk of getting shot...

reat to see Tommy Rosicky getting some love. A wonderful player. Such a pity we lost so long to injury. I was so excited when we signed him, this resurgence only makes the absences seem more of a lost opportunity.
