So you're an Ipswich fan? You sure you want to admit to that at the moment?
Of course. Every club has its up and downs - let's just hope we're getting our bad patch out of the way at the start of the season. We have a new manager and a lot of new players and you can't expect everything to click straight away. You've got to keep the faith.
You still got faith that Keane is the man?
Absolutely. Some people thought he's not the right man for a so-called family club but maybe they needed a bit of a kick up the arse. I think it might have all got a little bit comfortable down there and he will at least shake things up. I'm happy to give him two years and will stick by him this season as long as he doesn't take us down.
Presumably you're too young for the golden days of Ipswich with Mariner etc?
Yes, I missed all that, but my dad tells me that team with Mariner and Frans Thijssen was the best we've ever had. He still raves about those legends. I saw the second coming of Warky - and the third - so at least I've seen one of those legends in action.
So who was your Ipswich hero?
It might not be the sexiest name but Micky Stockwell - he always put in the effort and played about 500 games for Ipswich. He was little and I'm quite small, which probably explains why my other favourite player was Mauricio Taricco. He wasn't the biggest chap either.
We've had some names playing for Ipswich though - Finidi George, or Chicken George as the chap behind me nicknamed him because he apparently nods his head like a chicken when he runs. Did you know that he had the best Opta stats ever for his Ipswich debut. We thought he was going to be the nuts.
What's been your favourite moment as an Ipswich fan?
When we went up via the play-offs and beat Barmsley 4-2 in the final. You can say what you want about going up as champions, but there's nothing like a play-off final for emotion. We went a goal down and then played brilliantly to go on and win it. It was the last game at the old Wembley so it was pretty special.
The next season in the Premiership was crazy. It was brilliant until George Burley went and spent £6m on an Italian goalkeeper. It was like something clicked in his head and from that moment on he was never really the same. We got found out and it's all been a bit rubbish since.
So as an Ipswich fan you must have seen Escape to Victory?
No, I've only seen bits of it actually. Is that embarrassing (Yes - go and watch it now - F365)? It's mental that all these Ipswich players were in a film alongside Pele and, erm, Sly Stallone. I'd go and watch it as soon as I put this phone down if I hadn't promised my girlfriend I'd do the garden.
How often do you see Ipswich?
Not as often as I'd like - I've not been since last Christmas. It's so difficult to get back because we tour possibly more than any other band in the world. Thank goodness for the internet, that's what I say.
The Championship is real man's football to me. It might not be the best quality but it's more real than the Premier League. I enjoy watching Arsenal play but I have no interest in watching Spurs v Bolton or Fulham v Everton. I didn't even fancy the Birmingham derby.
Do the rest of the band have football clubs?
If he's pushed, Russell will tell you he supports Villa, but his favourite player is Tony Daley so that tells you a lot. Chris is a big Forest fan so we have a bit of banter, but Tom doesn't like football at all. We made him go on Soccer AM once but I don't think he'll agree to go on again. He said he was a Forest Green fan because we worked out that was probably his closest team.
Do you ever play yourself?
We have a kickabout sometimes, but I'm absolutely useless. I don't really enjoy competitive sports, though me and Russell have got well into table tennis and play every day on tour. He always wins but I'm improving and feel I'm getting closer. I've just ordered a new table off the internet because the last one fell off a truck. I have put in a stupid amount of research into this purchase and have picked one built for schools so it should be solid and durable. These are exciting times.
So finally, the new album, is it any good?
It's a really interesting record. As soon as we'd finished it, I wanted to listen to it - and that's not usual. It's more electronic and more experimental but it retains the good, uplifting melodies we're known for. I think we've produced an album that interests us first and foremost. You have to be prepared to lose a few fans unless you want to keep churning out the same old guff. What's the point of trying to re-create Munich? That was a gift from a higher power and may never happen again.
The Editors' new album 'In This Light And On This Evening' will be released on October 12.
