The Magpies' last outing saw them fall well short of the expected standard, with a lacklustre display at Southampton resulting in a 4-0 thumping.

Pardew conceded afterwards that a shambolic St Mary's performance was not good enough and that something will have to be done to ensure that there is no repeat.

Shuffling his pack may help to breathe fresh life into a season which has left Newcastle with little to play for.

Pardew hopes French forward Loic Remy will come back into contention on Saturday, with his 13-goal top scorer having shaken off an ankle injury.

Academy graduate Adam Armstrong could also be involved against the Red Devil, with the 17-year-old forward having recently made his senior bow off the bench in a 1-0 defeat at Fulham.

Pardew said in the Evening Chronicle: "We certainly looked like we needed some freshening up (at Southampton).

"I will have to look at that against Man United.

"We don't want our season to fizzle out.

"We have ourselves in a position now after two big defeats where we have to have a big response."

ah, Fergie is just having another pop at Rooney. He just wants to put him down whenever he gets a chance. Rooney is by far the best English player. Carrick is not far behind, mind. However, by elevating Carrick like that, Sir is having a dig at Wayne. Fergie is well-known for mind games like that. Good to see he's still feisty.
