The pacey 23-year-old has never hidden his desire to play down the middle, having often found himself stuck out wide for club and country.

Arsene Wenger has finally succumbed to his demands this season at club level, and has seen Walcott offer the perfect response with a flurry of goals.

He is now looking to make a similar positional switch on the international stage, with no forward in the current England squad having found the target on more occasions than him in 2012/13.

Walcott said: "It would be a dream to play up front for England, but, obviously, the manager makes the decisions.

"It's an option for the manager, who has probably seen me play a few times for Arsenal up front now. It's something different that we might not have had before, making runs in behind.

"I just love playing up front, you can wander around anywhere. Not just that, you can create more space for other players when you are quiet and go through patches in the game. Defenders are always wary of my pace and going in behind.

"Now, I've just got to learn the other side of it as well, when it is not going too well.

"I've got to hold the ball up. I am not going to be the best guy to hold it up at times, but that is something I am practising in training."

m absolutely disgusted that I've been misquoted in saying that if a chance came up to join Arsenal I would be interested. What I meant to say is if Man United or Chelsea were interested......
