Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and Tottenham Hotspur coach Andre Villas-Boas have both been less than complimentary about Villa's tactics over recent weeks.

Villas-Boas was the latest to suggest that Lambert looks for his side to take an aerial route from back to front, with his Spurs side having countered that approach to claim a 4-0 Capital One Cup success on Tuesday.

Lambert, though, has snapped back at the critics by insisting that Villa 'try to play football in the right way'.

He said: "It's detrimental to say things like that.

"If you look at your stats, how many long balls Chelsea played against us, I'm pretty sure we weren't ahead of them.

"We might play a long pass but we don't just kick it up front and hope for the best. It's not right to say that about us. We try to pass it and try to play football in the right way."

Meanwhile, Lambert has revealed that he will prevent Christian Benteke from linking up with the Belgium national side for World Cup qualifying duty if he feels Villa's talismanic frontman is still feeling the effects of a hip injury which is due to keep him sidelined for six weeks.

He said: "We don't want him on a plane. That will not help his injury.

"If he is not fit for us, he won't be fit for the Belgian national side."

irst Townsend, now Chiles. What next ITV? Comedy that you can actually watch without vomiting up your own spleen? I'll be sad to see Matt Smith go though. I actually quite like him. Plus, he was good in Doctor Who.

wful, awful pundit. He was crap on BBC, and offered a little more analysis than Robbie Savage - apart from the delivery of banality in a sexy accent. Also, as I'm Irish he'll never be more then a slimy, hand-balling f**ker in my eyes.
