The 23-year-old joined Villa back in 2009, but his time in Birmingham has been beset with injury.

But, upon Paul Lambert's arrival last year, Delph has enjoyed an injury-free run in the team and he is now showing some of the best form of his career.

Lambert has called on the former England Under-21 international to be called up to the senior squad, and Delph admits he is just enjoying playing game.

"For me it's just about playing games, staying fit, helping my team-mates and just repaying people back," he said.

"I'm sure if I stay fit, which is a big thing for me, then hopefully I might be offered a new contract.

"I'd love to be here for the rest of my career but that's not up to me."

Chief executive Paul Faulkner insists the club are looking at Delph's situation and added: "Fabian has had a great start to the season, and it's especially good to see after the injuries he had to overcome at the start of his Villa career.

"In terms of player contracts, we manage these very closely and will make sure we act at the right time in the best interests of the club."

Delph admits that he is looking to put his previous injuries issues behind him, and he has thanked Villa owner Randy Lerner for supporting him.

"I feel like I went missing for a few years, obviously it's down to injuries. It's not something I was happy with," he said.

"Every time I've got injured he's [Lerner] been positive with me, saying 'Come on, you can get back fit, push on and you can do well'.

"He's just believed in me, every time I've seen him he's said nothing but positive stuff to me.

"To be fair, I just love talking so whoever wants to talk to me I'll have a chit-chat with them!

"It's always nice to see Randy, you don't see him that often, but when you do he's always a gentleman."

hould have stayed because we carried him for 6.5 years. And then he has a breakthrough season, and was gone soon after. MU fans, you would be as disgusted had C Ronaldo left in 2007 and not 2009.

ood grief. Someone guessed that the form English player at the moment might be in his national side with some other players? And that's espionage? Now if they discovered that Emile Heskey was going to be in the starting line up.... at right back.... THAT would be espionage. Give it a rest Roy.
