Holloway on learning curve

Ian Holloway is looking for Crystal Palace to pose more of an attacking threat following their 1-0 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.

The Eagles contained Spurs for long periods at Selhurst Park, in their first fixture back in the Premier League, but struggled to create opportunities in the final third of the field.

Holloway admits that is an issue he intends to address, with there a desire on his part to land a pacey forward before the transfer window slams shut.

He told Sky Sports: "I don't know what the stats are, but we have got to learn how to attack. We defended very well, we blocked their spaces, but we didn't counter-attack after.

"Without (Yannick) Bolasie, with Wilf (Zaha) obviously gone, I think we need some pace - we are screaming out for that.

"I just wish Jonny (Williams) hadn't played 90 minutes for the Welsh team. He was injured for a year before he came and I thought he made a difference when he came on with his energy.

"But we'll have a chance next week to get a few people up to speed and maybe a few more people in and we'll knuckle down. I don't think the lads have gone away negative, they will think we can do this."

A penalty call five minutes into the second half was responsible for Palace's opening weekend setback, with Dean Moxey adjudged to have deliberately handled a cross from Aaron Lennon.

Holloway is not convinced the match officials got the big decisions correct, with his side unfortunate not to have taken what would have been a well-earned point.

He added: "It was a decision before that, maybe I don't understand what a free-kick is. When I was growing up my dad said you have got to be strong and you've got to body charge people. Then that was banned out of the game. You used to be able to do that to goalies.

"I think (Stephen) Dobbie has come back inside (Nacer) Chadli and Chadli's used his body, but deliberately taken his space, shouldered him, knocked him down and run off with the ball.

"A minute-and-a-half later is it deliberate hand-ball? I understand what they have said about making yourself bigger, but when you're diving to the floor to try and block a cross, he's half a yard away and you've got no time to get out of the way. There were three of my defenders who would have dealt with it.

"Do I think I would have got that at Tottenham? No I don't."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
