The defender earned his first cap for his country as they beat Uruguay 3-1 in a midweek friendly, impressing for the reigning World and European champions as he played the full 90 minutes.

Azpilicueta then went on to notch two assists in Chelsea's 4-1 win over the Latics at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, setting up goals for Eden Hazard and Marko Marin.

He told The Sun: "When you win it is always a good week.

"But it is also true I played with the national team. And it was my dream to play for Spain so it is a very good week."

Azpilicueta admits Chelsea's weekend success came at a good time following a worrying four-match winless streak.

The Blues remain third in the Premier League despite in-form Tottenham keeping pressure on them from below.

"The last few games have been disappointing. We play for Chelsea and we know we must win every game," he said.

"We have this pressure every game - Tottenham had won before we played and we wanted to keep our position - and we did. We won and with our supporters here.

"It is the first time I have been involved in so many goals. It is a good thing - to improve your game and create goals for the team."

Mentality

The right-back insists playing UEFA Champions League football every year is a must for Chelsea and is confident they can finish in the European places.

"The main thing is the mentality is still there to keep going. We know we have to stay in the top four for the stability of the club," he added.

"We have to play in the Champions League every season. We know it is going to be difficult but we have the quality to do it."
