Van Ginkel's domestic focus

Marco van Ginkel claims proving his worth at Chelsea is of greater concern to him at present than World Cup ambitions.

Marco van Ginkel: Focused on Chelsea, rather than World Cup squad place

The Dutch midfielder was an early-summer arrival at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea acquiring his potential from Vitesse Arnhem.

The 20-year-old was always drafted in with one eye on the future, but he would have hoped to make his mark early and nail down a regular place in Jose Mourinho's plans.

Van Ginkel has, however, seen Chelsea pack their squad with creative options in the middle of the park, which has restricted him to two substitute outings in the Premier League.

Unless he can nail down a starting berth, the Holland U21 skipper appreciates that there is no point setting his sights on a senior squad place at Brazil 2014.

He told Voetbalprimeur.nl: "I'm not really thinking about it. Maybe after the winter I will do more, but for now I am concentrating on Chelsea and the U21s."

Pressed on whether he expected to get more game time at Chelsea, he added: "That has been indicated to me. I will get minutes. From the conversations I have had, they are coming.

"In my position, in the middle, there are four or five candidates at Chelsea. There is great competition, but you expect that at a top club."

Van Ginkel has also acknowledged that he cannot expect national coach Louis van Gaal to consider him if he is not playing at domestic level.

He said: "That's the situation. It is the policy of Van Gaal that you need to play if you are to be selected for the Dutch national team. That's why I won't just sit here."
