Torres targets league goals

Fernando Torres hopes his display in the Capital One Cup clash at Swindon Town will see him drafted back into Chelsea's Premier League plans.

The Spaniard was included from the start by Jose Mourinho for an encounter at the County Ground which Chelsea breezed through.

Torres has made a habit of producing his best in cup competitions over recent years, and showed his class again against League One opposition.

He broke the deadlock in a third round clash, before providing a classy assist for Ramires to wrap up a 2-0 win.

Torres is now looking to carry his cup momentum into top flight football, with a derby date with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday very much in his thoughts.

Asked about his cup record and his hopes for the weeks ahead, Torres told Sky Sports: "It is just that in the last couple of seasons I have been involved more in the cup competitions than in the Premier League and I have scored more goals in the cups than in the league.

"Hopefully I will have the chance to play more often in the Premier League and score some more goals.

"We know that the season is long and that we will all have the chance to play in important games. We have got a big squad and we will all be involved.

"Hopefully we keep the hard work high and we are in the manager's plans, because there are 25 players in this squad and it is difficult to play in a great team."

Torres was not the only first team hopeful looking to catch Mourinho's eye on Tuesday, with Juan Mata and David Luiz also returned to the starting XI after much debate regarding their future.

On a comfortable victory and an opportunity for fringe men to shine, Torres said: "We know that in the cups in England, both of them - League Cup and FA Cup - it is very important to win away against the teams playing in lower divisions. We know that from our own experience in past seasons against other teams that we have played against.

"We are very happy with the performance of the team. We gave minutes to some players who have not been involved in the last matches, so everyone is happy with the result and happy to be back in the line-up. It is one more step forward."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.

he uber commercialisation of the 90s has led to the point where this overly familar, try hard, jolly hockey sticks type fronts up a major football match on a weekly basis. Unlike the great presenters of yesteryear, I doubt he would even recognise the scent of Brut.
