The Spain international has seen his long-term future at Stamford Bridge called into question on the back of Jose Mourinho's decision to overlook him for Premier League duty.

The Portuguese tactician has also called on Mata to alter his game in order to fit into his plans.

Mata was offered an opportunity to prove that he can be part of a new-look Chelsea side during a 2-0 Capital One Cup victory over Swindon Town on Tuesday.

He hopes that outing will be the first of many, with his focus locked on doing a job for his current employers - rather than the ongoing speculation on where he may end up.

Mata said in The Sun: "I've been training hard but it's not the same. You improve your rhythm by playing games.

"I've worked hard and wanted to show everyone that I can play and everything is okay.

"It's easy for me to focus on football and just do what I have to do. The only thing I have in my mind is to keep working, keep training hard, keep improving and keep scoring and making assists. That's what I did.

"I've played in three positions. In the beginning I was playing as a left winger, then on the right and last season as a No 10. I feel comfortable playing in any offensive position.

"It's better if a player can play in lots of positions rather than just one."

irst Townsend, now Chiles. What next ITV? Comedy that you can actually watch without vomiting up your own spleen? I'll be sad to see Matt Smith go though. I actually quite like him. Plus, he was good in Doctor Who.

wful, awful pundit. He was crap on BBC, and offered a little more analysis than Robbie Savage - apart from the delivery of banality in a sexy accent. Also, as I'm Irish he'll never be more then a slimy, hand-balling f**ker in my eyes.
