The 22-year-old Italian joined the Reds from Roma for £10m in the summer of 2012 but his first campaign at Anfield was disrupted by injury.

And, having joined Sunderland on loan for the 2013/14 season, he bagged his first goal for the Black Cats in dramatic style on Sunday, coming off the bench to score the winner against local rivals Newcastle.

But he told Italian radio station Rete Sport: "I remain a Liverpool player. I'm on loan because there wasn't space for me and, after a year of injuries, I needed to get my confidence back, to play some games.

"But my roots are still there. There has been a squad revolution there, but the worst thing for me was getting injured when I was actually playing at the start of last season."

However, Borini is fully focused on the task in hand with Sunderland for the time being and says their first league win of the campaign will give the team a huge lift.

"It was definitely important," he said. "Not so much just for me but for the whole team.

"It came at a difficult time and to get out of that slump is very important. It feels fantastic."

ove it when Jose accuses others of being defensive, cynical and playing to win. If I was Wenger, I'd get that quote laminated and framed - surely the biggest compliment he's ever received from Mourinho. You've got him riled Arsene - you're relevant again!

t's wrong to be making a joke out of Bender's name at the expense of gay people. It's the kind of childish, uncivilised thing that Football365 would deride and ridicule if it was another media outlet saying. Why is there a need for jokes like this? Does it make your writers feel like men? F365 might suggest that I 'lighten up', but it is genuinely traumatic for people who have been oppressed all their lives to be the butt of jokes, and to be told...

ou can't blame De Gea for wanting to leave, he has enough to do in front of goal as it is as well as taking on the role of Man Utd's version of Derek Acorah in trying to contact and organise a defence that isn't there.
