City followed up their opening Champions League win over Viktoria Plzen and Sunday's stunning derby demolition of Manchester United by thrashing Championship Wigan 5-0 in the Capital One Cup third round.

Stevan Jovetic struck twice while Edin Dzeko, Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas were also on target at the Etihad Stadium as City, despite 10 changes, took their goal tally in those three games to 12.

Pellegrini said: "I spoke with the players before we started the game, telling them we must always try to play the same way.

"We can change names but for me it was very important to see the same team we saw last Sunday, the same philosophy of football and the same high performance."

Summer signing Jovetic had struggled before bundling in his first City goal on the hour but grew in confidence and added a second from close range after 83 minutes.

Pellegrini said: "I think it is very important for Stevan.

"He wasn't playing normally because he had some physical problems but the last two weeks he has been working hard and I am sure he is going to be a really important player for us."

Toure's goal, the third of the night, was his fifth of the season and his third direct from a free-kick after similar efforts against Newcastle and Hull.

Pellegrini said of Toure, who came on for the second half: "He is an excellent player and if he adds goals from free-kicks - last Sunday he scored again - he is a player who can always improve more and Yaya is trying to do it."

Playmaker David Silva missed his fourth successive game with a thigh injury and could again be doubtful for Saturday's trip to Aston Villa.

Pellegrini said: "I think maybe for next Saturday I don't think he can play but maybe for the next game of Champions League, I think he could be fit."

Wigan boss Owen Coyle accepted the gulf in class between the two sides.

Coyle said: "We worked ever so hard, playing against one of the elite clubs of world football, let alone English football.

"They made 10 changes and their team was probably worth about £200million.

"There is no getting away from it, we knew it was a tough ask.

"As if their starting line up wasn't enough, I think the three subs they brought on probably added another £100million to the tally, but I am disappointed to lose by any margin of goals.

"We gave away really soft goals. We can learn from that. It was important we got through unscathed in terms of injury and hopefully we have."

ou can't blame De Gea for wanting to leave, he has enough to do in front of goal as it is as well as taking on the role of Man Utd's version of Derek Acorah in trying to contact and organise a defence that isn't there.

f you want to take six points off Arsenal, then that's a great strike force. Can't imagine either of them showing much for the rest of the season though...
