mr. factual, I think you will find those involved in the game believe Rooney to be one of the worlds best. Whether it is your cynicism or your club bias that prevents you from acknowledging this, I'm not sure. But those involved in the game have openly acknowledged him to being one of the best in the world. Consider the facts; Firstly, he plays for Man Utd. One of the world biggest, richest and most successful clubs. If he wasn't good enough, he'd have been shipped out by now and replaced, by one of the most ruthless managers the game as seen. He's won everything there is to win at club level, and contributed hugely towards every single trophy. He's scored against the best sides there are, at both club and international level. Coaches, players, journalists from all walks of life all talk of him as one of the worlds best, repeatedly. Qute why a Tottenham Hotspurs fan thinks he knows better is beyond me. Because you have Gareth Bale you now think you're entitled to offer informed opinion on what makes a player one of the words best? I've seen Van Nistelrooy, Cantona, Tevez and Ronaldo play for my club every week. Take it from a fan who knows; Rooney is up there with the very best. You can bang on about his performances for England at World ups when he's half fit, playing for an awful side that cannot keep the ball more than two minutes, for Man Utd he's a world class asset.

Rooney isn't one of the world's best though, especially not if you say opinions aside. Also, to claim that Ronaldo is lacking even in the slightest in technically proficient team-mates is to blatantly disregard many of the Madrid line-up. Both Ronaldo and Messi are team carriers btw, it just depends on which matches you watch.

@ downdog & mr factual - I wasn't 'comparing' anybody with anybody on who¿s the best. I was comparing styles. I used Rooney as he is a United player and is one (and I say 'one') of the so called World's best (opinions aside). I also said that technically Messi is the master. He is regarded as the World's best player and few would not agree. So can we end that argument? In naming Rooney I could have named many others for different teams but as I said, he's a Man U player so I used him. Comprendez so far? Right, in my opinion, and many many others, Ronaldo is a blinking handful. He is capable of winning games by himself. Yes, Real Madrid are no slouches but they are 10 times better with Ronaldo in it as he is the type to drive his team. Messi is also the best technical player but my point is he has many good technical players around him which just hi-lights his exceptional skill. He doesn't drag a team kicking and screaming. Ronaldo does. Yes, the Ronaldo/Messi debate is boring and so let's forget it as Messi isn't playing against Man United tomorrow. I think we could easily go toe to toe with a Ronaldo-less Real Madrid. For the record, I think a few other teams could too. For me, he is the danger full stop. I know Real Madrid have looked disinterested at times but we have also had some shockers. Both teams will be up for this one for sure. It's now that the CL gets interesting.

Heathy, no. Never compare Rooney to Ronaldo and Messi. We were all there the last time it happened and he didn't come off too well. Also, Messi has the best international record of the three.

If we try and go toe-to-toe with them we'll get beaten. We need to box clever. We need to stay tight on Alonso and ensure we don't take our eye off Ronaldo. At the same time, I do not want to see a repeat of the appalling performances against Barca in 2008. Yes, we prevailed 1-0 over two legs, but the over all performance level was a subserviant one and it was nerve wracking and a little embarrassing. Maybe it was part of a plan, but it was nerve racking, and it took a moment of genius from Scholes to settle it.

The problem with trying to set up tactics to stop ronaldo is that it always requires doubling or sometimes trebbling up on him. Inevitably this frees up a player for the opposition. Valencia is guaranteed to start both legs simply because he is quick enough to get back and put in a tackle. Rafael will also start for pace reasons over jones. Ronaldo always beats his man. When he beats Jones it is curtains for him. He hasn't got the speed to get back and recover some kind of positional authority. I would expect a very very quiet game from Valencia as his wings will be clipped to stay close to rafael at all times. Luckily real madrid don't have an alba or alves that will kill us on the overlap as we defend against ronaldo. (not saying marcelo is crap but he is manageable). Unfortunately when it comes to ronnie you can only hope that he has an off day in front of goal during his customary 5 chances a game. Can't wait for this game... it is going to be an edge of the seat encounter.

@colinhunt - Because the player we're talking about is Cristiano Ronaldo. He's a f***ing beast.

He is a player any defence in the world would fear, but United have been following the policy of attacking & scoring more than opponents, I hope United don't repeat the mistake they made at wembly against Barcelona of trying to worry far too much about stopping Barcelona rather than trying to do a little more of what they were capable of and Rooney goal showed that, as F365 suggested i guess that time.....

Heathy: As much as the Ronaldo/Messi debate bores me to tears, it also annoys me when someone uses untruths to strengthen one side's claims. Messi actually has the better strike rate at international record, and the Madrid team that Ronaldo plays in is hardly pants or lacking in alternative threats. In saying that, I do think United will prevail over the two legs. They are a (relatively) weak side but the Real players look very disinterested this season. Varane, as much as Ronaldo, will need to be on form if the Spaniards are to progress.

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.
