The Frenchman returned from more than two months on the sidelines with a hamstring injury for the first leg of the Magpies' UEFA Europa League last-16 tie with the Russian club at the Luzhniki Stadium on Thursday night.

Pardew's men frustrated the hosts to a goalless draw to leave the encounter finely balanced heading into the second leg at St James' Park next week.

The manager fielded a striker-less side in Russia, with the returning Ben Arfa deployed as the furthest forward player.

The 26-year-old managed Newcastle's sole shot on target, prompting a routine save from keep Vladimir Gabulov with his chipped effort.

Pardew was pleased with Ben Arfa's display as he continues to work towards full fitness.

He told the Daily Mail: "Hatem lasted longer than I thought and did well given he is not fit.

"I have thought about using him there before because if I was a centre-back he is the last person I would want to see with the ball at his feet. And I would certainly consider it again."
