The Magpies feel they remain light in an important area of the field and hope to address that issue during the summer transfer window.

Pardew does have Papiss Cisse, Yoan Gouffran, Shola Ameobi and youngster Adam Campbell at his disposal, but he wants greater competition for places.

That means he will be dipping into the market at some stage.

Newcastle have already admitted to being keen on Aston Villa's Darren Bent and Queens Park Rangers' Loic Remy, and efforts to bring them on board could be stepped up over the coming days.

Pardew told the Evening Chronicle: "I think we might need two strikers. My competition in that area - Cisse, Shola, Gouff and Adam Campbell - last season wasn't strong enough.

"In the Premier League, that's not enough. I need more than that."

While hoping to bolster his ranks in the attacking third of the field, Pardew claims to be happy with his defensive unit.

He has been linked with a move for a centre-half, possibly West Ham United's James Tomkins, but the Magpies manager says his focus is on other areas.

Pardew added: "I think we're pretty strong there."

think that puts all doubts over Benteke's quality to bed. Can he do it after receiving the ball to feet, in the box, totally unmarked, on a warm, sunny afternoon in Swindon? Oh yes he can! This year is definitely Liverpool's year. YNWA.

ll very well selling all midfield and strikers but unless we bring anyone in that is better than what we had then it will be a terrible transfer window in my view. Sorted out the defense but our midfield and striker options look very light.

ove it when Jose accuses others of being defensive, cynical and playing to win. If I was Wenger, I'd get that quote laminated and framed - surely the biggest compliment he's ever received from Mourinho. You've got him riled Arsene - you're relevant again!
