The versatile 29-year-old, who has suffered two cruciate ligament injuries, is back in full training.

It has been a long road to recovery for Taylor, with inevitable questions asked of his ability to regain full fitness.

He has worked hard to put himself back in contention, though, and joined the Newcastle squad on their pre-season trip to New Zealand.

He was forced to watch on last season as Newcastle’s campaign fell away, but he is convinced that better times lie ahead as Alan Pardew continues to reshape the squad with new recruits.

Taylor, who made his last appearance back in August 2012, said in the Shields Gazette: “Those last weeks were quite tough.

“I was in the dressing room day in, day out with the lads. It’s quite tough on them. Confidence wasn’t there. Everything was getting on top of them.

“We’ve just got to try and build on the first six or seven months of (last) season.

“We’ve got to try and get to a better place.”

ah, Fergie is just having another pop at Rooney. He just wants to put him down whenever he gets a chance. Rooney is by far the best English player. Carrick is not far behind, mind. However, by elevating Carrick like that, Sir is having a dig at Wayne. Fergie is well-known for mind games like that. Good to see he's still feisty.
