Danny Rose's first-half header proved enough for Spurs, but Stoke - who were reduced to 10 men when Ryan Shawcross was dismissed, finished strongly and could have grabbed an equaliser.

But Sherwood was pleased that his side showed that they are battling until the very end of the season.

"At this stage of the season it is about trying to get points, it is not always pretty and sometimes you have to dig in and work for each other and they certainly didn't look like they had their sunglasses and flip-flops packed ready for holiday," Sherwood said.

"They realised there was still a job to do for this great travelling support which we bring and they will try their best to the death.

"We have a derby at West Ham we need to win and we will send them home happy with victory in the final game with Aston Villa - that is the plan."

Sherwood feels winning at Stoke is a big three points for Spurs.

"They have taken some big scalps here, we should have come in more than two up, we dominated the game," he said.

"In the second half, I said be more patient with the ball and runs and we would create something but when they went down to 10 men that seemed to give them the initiative, the crowd was fantastic and drove them on and we had to ride it out.

"This team doesn't want to roll over and they are willing to put their bodies on the line and that is what I demand. I thought the two centre-halves were fantastic."

Rose was at the centre of the action, not only scoring the winner but then being the man fouled for Shawcross' second yellow card. He was also lucky to stay on the pitch when he shoved Geoff Cameron for reacting to a foul and Sherwood admits he had to bring him off to try and 'diffuse' the situation.

"He is a match-winner for us today, I thought he was performing really well today but I had to bring him off and diffuse the situation, it was so hyped up, I have never seen a crowd so hyped up," he continued.

"I just thought I should get him off the field, get him to the changing room and out of sight and out of mind, and try and diffuse the situation and I thought we achieved that."

The Spurs boss admits that he thought Rose might have seen red for shoving Cameron.

"My heart was in my mouth to be honest, he is a young guy still learning his trade and he scored the winning goal, and he is smiling as we haven't been reduced to 10 men and he can learn from it," he continued.

"It is a positive as we have come away unscathed and kept a clean-sheet and Danny will learn. He made the referee make a decision, but he will learn from that. He has come through the ranks and is improving all the time."

He insists that Shawcross deserved to be sent-off by Andre Marriner.

"I thought they were two bookings, but what can you do? Listen I like tackling, I don't want anyone to get sent-off but it was two bookings and the referee had a decision to make and he made the right one," he said.

With Sherwood's own future yet to be confirmed, he insists he would just continue until told otherwise.

"I continue to do my job, prepare the players and make sure they are up for the fight up to the final whistle of the season and if we continue to win then all good," he concluded.

terling needs to be told though that upon entering the Arsenal squad he will re-enact the final scene from Highlander where he will be thrown around a warehouse by cartoon dragons and then be a mere mortal that will only ever spend three to four weeks a season playing football and the rest on the physio's bed. There can be only one.....player available at The Emirates.

he game changed in our favour when Carrick came on. We were able to play further up the pitch due to having a player who can give and go with the ball and keep possession. Yet barkley made some runs and Townsend scored a good goal but carrick's inclusion and chiellini's withdrawal made the biggest difference to the flow of the game

o, you've not silenced anyone Andros, i'm afraid. We know you can score a great goal, and it's really handy to have your direct running and willingness to shoot on the bench. But until you can do the other things expected of a winger (beat the man, put a decent cross in, stay wide etc) then you can't expect more than a regular cameo. Wonderful goal though, what a hit! No wonder Buffon wanted the shirt.
