But the news has been offset by a possible timely return of fellow defender Jack Hobbs, who manager Steve Bruce is hoping will be back in contention for Saturday's game at Ipswich.

Alex Bruce sustained a season-ending Achilles injury during the weekend win over Middlesbrough, with scans confirming a ruptured plantaris, similar to the injury that ruled out Hull team-mate Sone Aluko in January.

Another Tigers defender, Paul McShane, sustained an Achilles injury that cut short his campaign in the recent home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Hull's management staff are waiting to learn whether Bruce will require surgery.

Team-mate Hobbs, 24, feared his season was over when he damaged ankle ligaments in last week's home defeat to Watford, but the player has responded well to treatment and could return to fill the void left by Bruce at Ipswich.

t's why Mourinho is so successful. He gives players a specific, limited set of functions to perform. They are but a cog in a machine. Do no more, do no less. I assume he learnt it from LvG :)
